Bridging the gap between digital content creators and journalists: Knight Center and UNESCO publish pioneering e-book

With 105 pages of interviews, research, first-hand accounts from news content creators like Dylan Page (aka News Daddy) and Kassy Cho (founder of Almost), illustrations and best practices, this unique open-access e-book published by the Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas, in partnership with UNESCO, is aimed at fostering understanding between digital content creators and journalists.

“Content Creators and Journalists: Redefining News and Credibility in the Digital Age,” is a must-have edited collection of lessons and observations from digital creators and journalists from around the world, shedding light on the emerging importance of influencers in the news media landscape.

Part 1 considers the similarities and differences between content creators and journalists and the important roles both can play in this new media landscape.

Profiles in Part 2 let readers get up close and personal with “newsfluencers” from around the world.

Part 3 provides perspectives from creators and activists using their influence to fight climate change, and Part 4 shows how creators can promote media and information literacy.

Lastly, in Part 5, the e-book offers best practices for journalists and content creators who want to ethically and successfully share the news in an age of digital media.

Available now in English, the e-book will be translated to Spanish and Portuguese soon, reaching an even wider audience.

Edited by Dr. Summer Harlow, associate director of the Knight Center and visiting associate professor at the University of Texas at Austin, the e-book draws on insights from various Knight Center/UNESCO initiatives, including:

  • A roundtable discussion with influencers and journalists from around the world held in Austin on April 11, 2024,

  • A panel discussion at the 25th International Symposium on Online Journalism in Austin, “Influencers/content creators and journalists: What can they learn from each other?”, and

  • Creation of an experimental youth multimedia newsroom that brought together journalists, content creators, and activists to cover UNESCO’s 31st World Press Freedom Day Conference May 2-2, 2024, in Santiago, Chile.

“This book is a testament to the importance of one of the most interesting phenomena of the impact of the digital revolution on the news media ecosystem: the proliferation of influencers or content creators suddenly endowed with the privileges of media organizations to gather, process, and distribute information to large audiences,” Rosental C. Alves, Knight Center founder and director and the UNESCO Chair in Communication at the University of Texas at Austin, writes in the foreword of the e-book.
